Several support groups will be starting this spring – including Loss of Spouse, Loss to Suicide, Children’s group (ages 4-12) and Teen Workshop (ages 13-18). You must register for these groups – no cost to attend! For more information please call 613-936-1455.
Unique in the Province, Bereaved Families of Ontario-Cornwall provides a Bereavement Centre which is open Monday to Wednesday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Located at 216 Montreal Road in Cornwall, no appointment is necessary for the bereaved to visit the Centre.
In addition to the Bereavement Centre, Bereaved Families of Ontario-Cornwall offers the following Programs and Services to help individuals cope with the loss of a loved one.
Open Monthly Support Evenings
Second Wednesday of each month from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Also known as SUPPORT AND SHARE NIGHT these monthly support evenings are open to all bereaved families. The evening includes a guest speaker and the opportunity to share with other bereaved individuals in small groups who have had a similar loss. The small groups are facilitated by trained bereaved volunteers who have participated in a recognized grief facilitating course through BFO – Quality Assurance Program.
Open Afternoon Support Groups
Last Tuesday of each month from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. These afternoon support groups are for bereaved adults and families who are struggling with the loss of a loved one. Afternoon support groups include a video presentation on coping with loss and the opportunity to share with other bereaved in a general group discussion format.
Closed Children Support Groups
For children up to age 12 who have lost a special person. Group consists of seven consecutive weekly sessions led by a registered social support worker and trained facilitators. Group is designed to support and encourage the unique needs of young grieving children. Through discussion, play and art activities children are able to understand their experiences of death and loss, and connect with each other in a supportive, safe and nurturing environment. Registrations for these groups are taken on an ongoing basis and groups are offered year round.
Parent Support Group
These information sessions are held in conjuction with the children’s group and include information on children’s grief and education on how to help a child cope with loss.
Closed Adult Support Groups
These small groups of 6 to 10 bereaved meet for six consecutive weekly sessions and are led by trained facilitators who themselves have experienced a similar loss. Program is structured and designed to provide the bereaved with the opportunity to learn about the grief process, share their experience with other bereaved who have had a similar loss, and develop the necessary tools to assist inthe choice to grow. Groups are delivered on an ongoing basis. Registrations are available by calling or visitnig the Centre. Groups are available for the following losses: Loss of a Child, Loss of a Parent/Sibling, Loss of a Spouse/Partner, and Loss of a Loved one to Suicide.
Held Spring and Fall or as needed. Consists of a one-day workshop led by professionals and trained facilitators. These workshops are designed to support adolescents ages 13 to 19 who have experience the death of someone special. Workshops are designed to help teens explore the difficult aspects of change after a loved one dies. Registrations are accepted on an ongoing basis.
BFO can provide professional speakers for your community, workplace or service group on topics relating to grief and bereavement. Available to surrounding communities. For more information, please contact the Centre.
Telephone Help Line
Calls are taken Monday to Wednesday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. It’s an opportunity for the bereaved person to receive immediate support, share their concerns and obtain information on healthy grieving. After hours messages are retrieved and returned daily.
Bereavement Packages/Referral for Support Request
Individually prepared resource packages are available for bereaved individuals. Funeral homes/agencies/caregivers working with the bereaved can request bereavement packages by calling the centre or faxing in a ‘Bereavement Package Request Form’. Packages may be requested by phone, fax and in person.

Please note that this request is considered a THIRD PARTY REQUEST and that BFO respects the privacy of clients and no telephone contact will be initiated by our organization. Please note that the client will be added to our quarterly Bereavement Support Newsletter mailing in order to provide them with supportive bereavement articles and information on upcoming support groups and workshops which they can attend at no cost.

Please note that with this request BFO WILL INITIATE CONTACT with your client by phone and an individually prepared Bereavement Package will be mailed and future quarterly Bereavement Support Newsletter to provide your client with update information on BFO upcoming supportive programs and services.
Provides a bridge for the newly bereaved person who may not be ready to participate in support groups. It’s an opportunity for the newly bereaved to receive support and comfort, with a bereaved facilitator that can share their experience, offer support and coping suggestions.
The bereaved can call the office to speak to a Facilitator if a visit to the office cannot be arranged. They can discuss their concerns, seek supportive insight and obtain information regarding upcoming groups or workshops.
Sections of the Lending Library
include general information, spousal, sibling and parent loss, loss of a child and loss of a loved one to suicide. We have a large section on children/teen grief. There is also a section on loss of a pet.
Facilitator training is offered to individuals who have experienced the loss of a loved one and to professionals who would like to gain experience in helping the bereaved.
Open from 9:00 AM 4:00 PM Monday to Wednesday and no appointment is necessary to visit the Bereavement Centre for support, resources and information on healthy grieving.
